What is this?
The Octanise Thermal Services Calculator is a completely free-to-use tool for businesses to use to calculate the unit cost and carbon impact of common thermal services provided to tenants: space heating and cooling, and hot and chilled water services.
It combines basic variables (cost and carbon of primary utilities: electricity, gas and water) with knowledge of heating and cooling systems (including energy source, efficiency and transmission losses, and inflow/outflow temperatures) to calculate the basic price and carbon footprint of one unit of each of these services.
Use it to support precise calculation of cost and carbon of consumption for these services, or as a way to evaluate scenarios; e.g. how much can you save per kWh of space heating by reducing your outflow temperature by 5°C?
Users can rely on the defaults in the tool (carefully calibrated to the UK market and using agreed industry standards), or add their own known values for any one of the variables. So, for instance, if you happen to know exactly how efficient your hot water boiler is, you can enter that information into the tool to get a more accurate output. It can even account for the change in efficiency across temperature bands, for more precise handling of heating efficiency.
